Sue Ann Flanagan (nee O’Brien), age 92, died peacefully on May 7th, 2022.
Sue Ann is survived by her six children: Eileen Flanagan, James Flanagan (Mary Pat), John Flanagan (Patty), Annie Doppes, Mark Flanagan (Michelle) and Helen Flanagan. Sue Ann was blessed with nine grandchildren: Amy Flanagan, Kelly Burgess (Andrew), Mary Bergner (Mike), Katie Fortuna (Matt), Annie Waddell (Bobby), Margot, Joe and Charlotte Doppes and Clare and John Flanagan. Sue Ann had two great grandchildren: Josephine Fortuna and Naomi Burgess. Sue Ann had many nieces and nephews whom she loved.
Sue Ann lived her life with appreciation of the present moment. She centered her life on her large family and close-knit but generous circle of friends. She made her home on the south side of Chicago. She was grateful to raise her children in Beverly. Sue Ann loved being known as “Mrs. Flano” by all the neighborhood kids and delighted in the constant commotion that accompanied raising a large Catholic family. Sue Ann deeply valued her friendships, evidenced by the life-long ones she maintained. She was blessed with the gift of style and took pleasure in helping her girlfriends pull together outfits for special occasions; this culminated with the launch of her own retail business in Evergreen Park called The Total Look. She ran this business while her young family was growing, at a time when it was rare for women to work outside the home. Sue Ann will be fondly remembered for her zest for life: her habit to wear something red when she needed cheering up; her love of sweets in the middle of the night; her countless small gifts that she bestowed on each visitor. Though her last years were challenged by a fading memory, her heart and humor remained steadfast. Her remaining family members are each blessed with her joyful and fierce spirit.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Sue Ann on Friday May 20th, 2022, at Christ the King Church, 9235 S. Hamilton Ave, Chicago, IL 60643. Visitation will be held 10:00am-11:00 am. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am.
